What cancer patients wish you knew

“The things people say to help sometimes make me feel worse, but I stay quiet about it because they mean well.”

This dynamic leaves patients feeling isolated while their colleagues remain unaware of their impact.

We can work together to transform how your campus community shows up for people in crisis.

People react to the workshop:

I found it all useful (not just to be polite). My experience was very positive, especially being able to work in breakout rooms. I love learning experiences that are interactive and where I get to talk and process, especially in small groups. The use of your cards as prompts for discussion and reflection grounded the learning beautifully. I feel better prepared for difficult or courageous conversations after participating in the workshop.

Robert Zeitlin

I haven’t had many constructive conversations like this so it was refreshing to have a space like this. Thank you for creating this.

Rachel Daniels

It is possible to talk about difficult topics like disease and death. I learned the skills I will use.

I am a cancer survivor.

My Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2007 was treated with six months of chemo and three weeks of radiation.

This also put me in social settings with other young adults with cancer. We have stories.

I am a teacher.

Twenty years of teaching beginning band let me hone the skill of breaking down complex things into their smallest necessary pieces.

And I know the tedium of many PD workshops and intentionally do better.

I love psychology.

Learning about how human brains work has always been interesting to me. I have an undergraduate minor in psychology, a masters in counseling, and countless pysch books read for fun.

I know interactions.

As a socially anxious person, I’ve long since studied (overtly and covertly) how people interact and what to say in high- and low-stakes situations.

But you’re not coming to me because of who I am. You’re coming to me because of how I can help you and the people around you. You want to feel less uncomfortable when someone you love is in crisis. You want your campus community to be more supportive to its people.

Dip your toe in and see what I have to offer. People from nine countries on four continents are better able to help their people in crisis because of these tools. Join them. Use the contact form above to start a collaboration.
